What Is a Guardian Home?

A simple explanation

A Guardian Home is a special opportunity for an individual or family to raise a top-quality “pick of the litter” puppy or dog selected by the breeder for future breeding. These dogs are typically the best of the best—and the Guardian receives the dog at a greatly reduced cost in exchange for partnering with the breeder during the dog’s breeding career.

How the Guardian Program Works

Ownership & Transition

  • The dog remains  registered in the name of the breeder during its breeding career.
  • At approximately 4–5 years old (varies by dog and gender), the breeding career ends.
  • At that time, the dog becomes the Guardian family’s forever pet, and registration papers are transferred to the Guardian’s name.

Responsibilities of the Guardian Home

  • Provide daily care, love, exercise, and a stable home environment.
  • Cover routine vet care, including vaccinations (except first puppy shots), and all normal living expenses.
  • Be responsible for the dog’s behaviour and safety while in your care.
  • Ensure the dog is a house pet, not an outside-only dog..
  • Complete at least one obedience class.

Responsibilities of the Breeder

  • Retain full breeding rights until the agreement is fulfilled.
  • Be listed on the dog’s IOEBA registration papers during the breeding career.
  • Cover all breeding-related vet expenses and any vet care required while the dog is with the breeder.

Working Together

Guardians agree to make the dog available to the breeder for breeding, showing, or special training as needed.

Flexibility and communication are essential for the success of this partnership.
